[As Add watches Ain re-enter the tank in silence, he definitely feels a mini crash out approaching. Like, he’s actually talking to this Siren right now, who can understand him. It hasn’t even hit him yet he can breathe underwater now. He can SPEAK to these creatures they can barely understand, and he’s going to have to somehow be savvy enough to hide that from his coworkers. He will be able to understand Blu- Ain- but no one else can know. At least, not yet.

If it seems like he’s alarmingly calm right now, it’s mostly the shock holding it all back. It’ll come rushing in soon enough.

For now, he has to keep it together, because just as he gets Ain in the tank and the grate back overtop, the others finally break their way in with understandable alarm, to which Add is able to pretty quickly diffuse the situation. He explains that he was cutting the meat for Ain’s breakfast and accidentally slipped with the knife, hence the bandages and blood. They try to press him on what happened with the alarm, and he calmly lies that the grate got stuck when he was pulling it back, triggering a false positive. They all seem suspicious, but why would Add lie about this? He’s always fastidious and careful with recording every detail to the exact number, so…

Eventually, they leave, and Add is left standing in an empty room with damp floors, bloody towels everywhere, including his ruined lab coat across the room. He’s lucky they didn’t ask too much about where the water came from. Maybe they assumed Ain just splashed around in confused alarm when he cut himself.

Either way, Add is…tired, and just then his boss suggested he go home. Usually he’d refuse, but after what just happened? He thinks he needs it.

He wanders back to the tank, looking up at Ain.]

I’m going home for the day. I’ll be back tomorrow. Don’t cause trouble for me, got it?

[But Ain wants to cause problems so bad... he wishes he could understand the other humans that come in, but Add's the one he's magically connected to and not the others, so RIP him. He swims around for a bit, then puts his hands up to the glass as Add says bye to him.]

Anyway, with the verbal consent granted in a way he never thought would be possible, he heads out and goes to his supervisor to propose the solution. As expected they’re not thrilled since it pushes back Ain’s viability in the breeding program, but Add counters that he’s already stressed as it is from recent events, and the breeding might not even take because of that if they were to artificially do it. It’s a setback, but not a permanent one. Ain’s comfort is the priority now until the next mating season rolls around in a couple months.

They get the procedure cleared, and within a few minutes Add is back in his office setting up the examination tank in the corner, filling it with shallow water just like he might for a physical. Except here, he doesn’t have any of those tools he’d be using. He has gloves, a bottle of lubricant, some clean towels and gauze, and this…device Ain has likely never seen before. A couple, actually. One is small, a long silicone rod of sorts that’s tapered at the end with ridges all down its length. Beside it is a slightly larger one, the difference here being there’s an opening at the tip, and the base is connected to a hose that runs down to a container filled with something unseen hidden in the tool cart. That remains where it is for now as Add takes a moment to psych himself up before heading to the tank.

Add knows, at least via scientific terms and what all the textbooks say, how intercourse works between Sirens. They’re a unique species in that gender doesn’t necessarily quantify who they’ll mate with, but if two males or two females mate, no spawn can be fertilized. Only males have the ability to deposit the eggs inside though, which was what they were expecting Ain to do with the female. But Ain keeps saying things like he was “waiting to be mounted” so it’s clear they got their wires crossed at some point.
