[It's easy to make enemies in the wild west. You piss off the wrong person- or right, whatever the case may be- and suddenly your head is on the chopping block. You see, people around these parts tend to not forgive and forget. They take slights as a matter of personal insult, things that should be punished by whatever means available. The stockage, the gallows, a showdown at high-noon. That's just how things are done. It's a brutal, unforgiving environment, but that's simply the way it's always been. Either you learn to live with it, or the landscape and the roughnecks in it end up eating you alive. You'd best hope that God has mercy on you then, because the world sure as hell won't.

This is the kind of world Nicholas the Punisher has grown up in. Orphaned at too young of an age, he'd been forced to make that decision long before he should have had to: to survive, or die miserably under the desert sun. For children who had nothing, you either got lucky and got scooped up by the local church, or you simply lived on the streets and made do. You stole for your bread and kept yourself alive with it, assuming you didn't get caught. And, well...Wolfwood toed the line between the two, raised under the watchful eye of the Church of the Saints of Michael while also getting himself into trouble on the regular because what's he gonna do when unsupervised, behave?

That kind of upbringing toughens you. Molds you. Turns you into a hardened outlaw, though there are very few people in this side of the country who aren't one of some flavor. It's just a matter of how under-the-radar you manage to fly, which is easier when you operate as part of an interconnected unit, making stabs at power in isolated incidents. That's how it works for Wolfwood's gang, for they've been in this business long enough to not be stupid about it. Sure, a lot of them have been caught and imprisoned in their time, and many others killed in heists gone wrong, or shootouts that turned to bloody massacres.

Wolfwood has seen a lot. But what he hasn't seen is his boss this fucking angry.

Apparently, a whore found their way into their camp at some point during a time either when Wolfwood was asleep, out on a different job, or simply missed them altogether, because he sure as hell wasn't there for the crux of it. Anyway, said whore proceeded to seduce the boss heavily, probably fucked him in one of the inns or something, it's not abnormal for this to happen. Oftentimes they'll all slip off to find a hooker to shack up with when needing to blow off some steam, so he really had no reason to...care? At least not until the boss started making this huge stink about it. Because apparently, this particular whore managed to rob him blind in the night before stealing away, and now he and the other men are in the aftermath of it all.

And wouldn't you know it. Wolfwood has been chosen as the lucky man to hunt this whore down and get them arrested and/or sent to the gallows for their crimes. Because apparently, as Wolfwood is to find out, this particular whore is also a serial thief. How the fuck did their boss manage to get played so badly by someone who has wanted posters all over the damn place, good god...

Whatever. He figures it's going to be an easy job, especially if it's just a whore he has to bring in. How hard could that be? Especially since finding their location is simple enough by asking around a few towns, taking his horse out from their campsite on towards the last place they'd been sighted. It's a relatively busy town just north some twenty miles from the last town Wolfwood had stopped in, the usual fare with an even mix of people and storefronts alike. Where he wants to go is the tavern, though.

That's usually where the local sluts like to hang out.]

[The west is no less kind to those who feasibly have everything, or so Ain would say, if his opinion on the matter was asked for. One might argue that he shouldn't have left the wealth of his family and their own Church behind, that he could have a comfortable life if he'd simply conform. Unfortunately... unfortunately, Ain is the sort of person who seeks his freedom and doesn't like to be held down by any chains. The chains of his mother, for example, and her religious zealotry. It wouldn't fly. Asking Ain to find a wife and have children? Absolutely not.

Society here is hyper-patriarchy, hyper-toxic, hyper-masculine. Ain is, perhaps, none of these things. He has soft, boyish features at 23, and even if he's tall, he simply doesn't exude that masculine energy that most people would expect. No facial hair, no big muscles, just lithe and pretty and easy on the eyes. Someone who can slip through a crowd and confuse people with his general appearance. Is he a man? Is he a woman? The answer is he's stealing your money.

At a certain point, Ain realised that "freedom" included "not being bound by the chains of working a real job". Saloon owners are constantly getting robbed. Running a shop is only profitable sometimes. Money makes the world go round, and Ain detests dealing with annoying people who would shout at him or otherwise ruin his day. How is his freedom achieved, then? Oh, you know... swindling. Getting paid to sleep with men so far in the closet they've reached the opposite coastline. Seducing men who are definitely in the closet and taking their money whether they wanted to give it up or not. It means that Ain doesn't have to work for a living, and he can comfortably move from town to town and do whatever he wants. At this point, he's so far from home his own mother probably doesn't even know he's wanted...

Speaking of those posters, any time he sees one, he gleefully tears it down and shreds it. You can't prove it was ever there!

When he's not swindling men out of their coinpurses, though, he can be found in the seedier saloons on stage, an acoustic guitar across his thighs, singing a tune to anyone who will listen and leave a tip. And, hey, to his credit? He's bringing in business! And if someone, say, happens to be interested in him and Ain cheerfully says hello and brings them to whatever shoddy shack he's staying in for the time being... that's not the bartender's fault, certainly!

This is where Wolfwood will find him. On stage, singing, dressed in something not quite meant for men. Who's going to tell him no at this point? (A lot of people, actually, but those people aren't here.)]

[Honestly...Wolfwood had assumed his target was a woman, because his boss is a man, and would the boss be gay??? Well...potentially, honestly men sleeping with other men isn't a super well kept secret out here, it's just one that they do not talk about unless they want to wake up with their tongues missing. So, consider Wolfwood putting forth a vote of confidence for a man who does not deserve it and certainly has had his cock buried in Ain within the last 48 hours and some change. Good lord.

Anyway, Wolfwood is reasonably sure he has the right place when he hears music coming through the saloon's double doors, which prompts him to bring Angelina up to the fence along the front where people tie up their horses to drink and feed while waiting for their owners to return definitely too drunk to be driving, but can you get a DUI when driving a horse? Not really, they're a little too unpredictable on their own for being intoxicated to make a whole lot of difference, let's be real here. He'll get a feed bag strapped to Angelina's nose before reaching up to adjust the holster he has strapped around his shoulder, just in case. It's kept concealed under a thick leather jacket (again, another poorly kept secret for cowboys, but still you don't want to be VISIBLY packing as much heat as he is in an establishment like this one) alongside his pistol at his hip. It weighs heavy there, because he's expecting to have to use it pretty soon here. He was told to bring the target in alive, so there's that.

He tips his hat down a little as he pushes the doors open and steps inside just as Ain is finishing a set to the tune of a bunch of drunk men whistling and clapping as they shout for Ain to sing another song. It's what Wolfwood intended to listen to as he went to the bar for a drink, but as he heads up that way, he realizes that the woman up on stage seems. Familiar.

That silvery hair, lithe neck and shoulders and a plunging neckline.

[He is indeed the son of a bitch! How did you know, Wolfwood?

Ain is not sure that these men know he's a man. He's not sure that he cares, either. They're drunk, they're not throwing tomatoes at him, it's a good day. The more money they throw into the hat at his feet, the better off he is for the foreseeable future. As Wolfwood is coming in and heading toward the bar, one of the drunks tries to climb onto the stage (without, you know, taking the conveniently placed stairs some two feet away), and Ain quite literally hikes the green silk of his skirt up and shoves a boot into the man's shoulder.]

Ah-ah! Sweet little boys have to stay in their places.

[There is... an energy about this, surely. His tone definitely says "whore". His wanted posters that he rips off the wall every day say "whore who swindles". The way he looks at Wolfwood across the way simply says target acquired. [Well now. He isn't expecting to be accosted from the stage by little miss herself (because yes, he STILL thinks Ain is a woman from this far away from the stage, he's stupid he's wearing shades indoors okay can you blame him), and because of that it means that every eye is suddenly on him, which is sortof the opposite of what he wanted to start off with. He knows he's a recognizable face for some, but fortunately he rode up into this town late enough in the evening that most of the men here are so drunk they don't know what's going on. Even if they do recognize Wolfwood, they aren't going to remember his face by morning. It's fine, he's free to do his job, whatever.

He tries not to let it ruffle his feathers too badly, though, continuing on his path to the bar until he makes it to a stool that he can sit on sideways while he watches the show. He nods to the bartender, asks him for a glass of brandy, then turns his attention back to Ain as he raises his voice right back.]

[He tips his hat back a little, smirking as the crowd erupts not a second after him saying that.]

[Throughout this entire conversation, Ain is still stepping on a man, so that oughta set the tone what with the song he's about to sing. He winds up taking his boot off of the guy once he's sure he's put him in his place. Now, to strum the guitar a bit while he finds the tune and the rhythm. A sort of prelude, if you will.

Boys like Wolfwood need subliminal messaging to get it. Ain knows lots and lots of songs about getting down and dirty, focused on men or women or whoever. He can't exactly sing a song about a man pursuing another man without getting shot, probably, but that's fine. What he can do is a bit of role-reversal, that is, sing a song about a man bottoming to a woman. Deeply ironic, considering the circumstances.

Why give men the power to think they're in control of their little fantasies, after all? Let's twist the masculinity around a little. Also, let women ride, rights for women and for bottoms dressed as women!!]

[Wolfwood considers himself (as far as he knows anyway, or allows himself to know) to be a straight man. Most "normal" men in this country are. Those that aren't typically don't say as much, lest they want to be persecuted for it. But again...it's the worst kept secret in the west. If you know, you know, and if you know then no you don't, because you'll be losing your head sooner than you'll actually be telling anyone about it.

Anyway, it's very likely disease is also rampant at the same time that all of this is going on, because masculinity is toxic and they have no protection, oops!

For right now though, Wolfwood has no reason to believe that Ain is anything more than who he thinks he- or, she- is. He snorts, sinking back on his barstool as he picks up his glass just as Ain gets to singing, the heel of his boot propped up on one of the stool rungs as he lazily watches the rowdy crowd down on the floor ahead of him, all of them hooting and hollaring and whistling at Ain up on stage. They can all see up his skirt from where they're sitting most likely, and that just makes them more rambunctious as time goes on, not to mention the raunchy and downright racey nature of what's being sung. Women, topping men??? What a wacky world that would be.

He knocks back a swig of his liquor, pondering how he's going to settle this score. He needs to get to Ain...somehow, and he figures that won't be too much of a problem, given how visibly horny he is already. Getting him off to himself should be easy, and coaxing him to come along wherever he'd like should be even easier. Since Wolfwood is already wise to his tricks, he isn't going to be the one stripped bare and pickpocketed for all he's worth. Nah, they'll be making him the boss after all of this is over, he thinks.]

Ain's skirt has layers, of course, so it's a little difficult to see up unless you're really underneath his boot. Which, with the way he still has the silk hiked up? Very possible, especially if you're the guy he was kicking and continues to kick sometimes. About midway through the song, Ain simply has his boot permanently on this guy's face because he Will Not stop trying to climb onto the stage. A quiet glance from Ain to the bartender says "remove him when I'm done", because Ain is very much Fine so far. The big guy hasn't actually tried anything, he's just being rowdy.

Naturally, all of this makes the holster of a gun strapped to his thigh all the more obvious, but what's a lady to do without some self defense? There are also several knives there, too, so clearly Ain is uh... prepared for the worst while looking for the best.

The song comes to an end and the horny drunks cheer, and it's then that the bartender — a burly, giant man with one eye who looks like he takes no bullshit — drags the unrulier crowd out. As this happen, Ain cheerfully calls after,]

[He's almost done for the night, though. Sunset approaches, and going home in the chill of the desert isn't exactly fun — it's rapidly cooling off, and everyone can feel it through the saloon doors. Ain performs one more song, another rowdy and horny one, and then by that point most of the got-here-early drunks have hit the ground and the others are being told to clear out before the sun goes down. The local whore (thief) is packing up his guitar in a hard leather case... but he isn't immediately grabbing it as he leaves the stage. In fact, he and the bartender have a brief discussion about him leaving it there for the night, "I'll be back in the morning to bring you more business, love". It's not that they're friends, really, but can a businessman really complain if a woman(?) man(?) person of questionable gender presentation brings in coin? Nay.

If Wolfwood wants him, now's his chance, because Ain is sweeping out a little too close, letting Wolfwood get a scent of rosy perfume as he passes.]

[It's all deliberate, on Ain's end. He's trying to get Wolfwood's attention, all while Wolfwood is trying to figure out how to get Ain's attention. Hilarious, truly, how they both think they're outsmarting the other when they both have the same things in mind. And like, let's be honest here: Wolfwood has been watching the entire time Ain performed his set, and he is not unaffected by it. He's the same red-blooded heterosexual that every other man in this bar is (read: all 30% of them), so watching Ain sit up there all pretty singing about the raunchiest shit imaginable turned his head, too. It became all the more palatable the more booze he got in him too, even though he's only actually had a single glass of brandy over the course of those several songs.

The saloon is closing up for the evening, which means Wolfwood is going to lose Ain if he doesn't do something. And, well...it hasn't closed entirely, and it seems that he and the bartender are both on good terms, right?

[Wolfwood hails the bartender as he places his glass back down, sliding it across the counter.]

[All men are the same. Ain was expecting to be followed, but hey, he'll take a seat with poise and grace. Up close, though, it's going to be a game of "are you a man or a woman" because uh.

Ain is soft. He's just soft, with plump pink lips, a sheen across them betraying a bit of makeup. He has freckles sprayed across his face like he was hit with paint splatters, trailing down his neck and his collar and the tops of his shoulders before they disappear entirely into his shirt. The right half of his hair is braided, and there's a ribbon in the back of his curls.

Yet... He is flat as a board and not even trying to look like he has any breasts like, at all, and his voice is actually a high baritone — not quite the tenor of a lower pitched woman's voice. Those things are difficult to tell in music and when he's purposely making his voice higher on stage for an act, but when he's winding down? Yeah, no, that voice is fucking deep.

Let's play the gender guessing game!

The barkeep is getting Wolfwood his strong liquor again, but Ain's tastes are on the delicate side. This is no fancy place with wine, but they've got apple beers, and that's what Ain gets served. It's light, it still burns going down, but the liquor taste is offset by the apple. His lips touch the glass, and the glass comes away with a lipstick stain.]

Mister sure is sweet. Here I thought that rough exterior was going to make you all prickly.

[Ain is draping himself over Wolfwood's side, practically hanging off of him. Is he wearing a necklace or rosary or anything like that, because if so, Ain's fingers are looping into it. Pressed up against Wolfwood like this, it's a lot easier to tell that he is, uh...

[Wolfwood has experience with sleeping around, basically everyone who is of age does actually. That's just kindof What Happens in these towns, though far more when you're in a bandit group like his. He shakes his head a little, shaking away the unwelcome thoughts, allowing Ain to stay close to him as he balances his brandy in his free hand. He'll even go so far as to loop an arm around Ain's waist. His shirt is open wide underneath that thick black jacket, and yet he is wearing a rosary which Ain is free to play with at his heart's content.]

Nah, me? I'm a gentleman, y'see. Ain't nothin' like those brutes down by the stage.

[Wolfwood, because he's being led around by the nose here basically, follows Ain right out of the saloon and back outside to where their horses are parked. Incidentally, he tied Angelina not far from Ain's horse, thinking a horse that massive belonged to another cowboy. Imagine his disbelief when Ain flings himself up onto a horse that would be difficult for even him to mount, his expression tightening as he pulls the feed bag off Angelina's head and stuffs it into the back of her saddlebag.
